Alabama graphic artist

Graphic artist needed!

Have you got maps and charts down cold, and are searching for ways to expand your graphics repertoire? The Decatur Daily, a 20,000-circulation broadsheet in Decatur, Alabama, is looking for you.

We need someone able to produce daily maps and graphics, but also able to volunteer story ideas and proactively pitch infographics. Our paper is about to undergo a redesign and we want you to help make graphics an integral part of our content and be willing to embrace alternative visual story forms as we move forward into new territory. We're eager to hear your ideas!
Ideally you have a few years' newspaper graphics experience, and are fluent in Freehand and Illustrator. Quark is also a plus.

Scenic Decatur, in northern Alabama, is situated next to a wildlife refuge on the Tennessee River, and is home to both industry and lots of outdoors activities. If you think this position might be for you, please send your resume and portfolio to Jennifer Boucher at Creative Circle Media Consulting. Questions? E-mail jen@creativecirclemedia.com.

Be the next graphics editor in Orlando

Here's the post at VizEds and snd.org:

The Orlando Sentinel is seeking an experienced visual leader to direct the efforts of its graphics department.

In this position you’ll coach, manage and evaluate the Sentinel’s team of five graphic artists; set direction and standards for illustration and graphics style; research and create graphics for A1 and work with editors throughout the newsroom to plan the visual storytelling for daily coverage and enterprise projects.

The Graphics Editor is one of three department heads who report to Associate Managing Editor Bonita Burton. It's an exciting period of rapid change at the Sentinel, and the Graphics Editor will be expected to work closely with the Design Editor and Executive Photo Editor to promote innovative thinking throughout the visuals group.

Candidates should have:
* A bachelor’s degree, preferably in journalism
* At least five years of experience as a graphic journalist
* Well-developed organizational and communications skills
* A mastery of contemporary graphics and animation programs, including Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash and 3D rendering software
* A thorough understanding of English grammar, usage and syntax and a working knowledge of libel and privacy law.

Management experience at a daily newspaper is strongly preferred, though senior artists with high leadership potential will be considered.

To apply, please send a resume, references and portfolio of your best explanatory storytelling to:

New graphics editor at the Tennessean

I have no idea if he's a member or not, but does that really matter? From AME/Visuals Jeff Glick via VizEds and Charles Apple:

Please join me in welcoming David Wersinger to The Tennessean as our new graphics director.

Wersinger, a 25-year newspaper veteran, comes to us from the Orlando Sentinel where he managed the news graphics department and led their award-winning graphic coverage of "The Shuttle Columbia Disaster."

Wersinger starts Feb. 13. and reports directly to me.
He's from Orlando, which just completed a redesign and is now looking for, duh, a graphics editor.

Denise Reagan to Jacksonville

About a year ago, we here at the Sun-Sentinel lost Denise Reagan as our News Design Director. While we were sad to see her go, we were happy about her new baby! Well, Denise is leaving us again to take a position at the Florida Times-Union in Jacksonville. She'll be the DME for Visual Journalism, and we wish her the best of luck. Above is Denise's farewell page. It's based on our Pope coverage.
